Route planning with ChatGPT
Route planning with artificial intelligence - that's the promise of a new tool from komoot. It is an app that connects to ChatGPT and then finds outdoor routes via text input. Users can search for routes by length, region, duration or type of sport and transfer the results directly to the komoot app. The integration is intended to simplify route planning for cyclists, hikers and runners.

The komoot navigation platform has developed an app for ChatGPT that makes outdoor routes accessible via natural language input. Users formulate their enquiry in just a few words and receive a selection of suitable tours and places of interest. It can be used by ChatGPT users. The app is now available for download and can be called up in the ChatGPT input bar with "@komoot". Alternatively, you can also open the menu on the left in the chatbot, select Open apps and enter Komoot.

ChatGPT with access to Komoot routes

The app opens up a collection of over seven million sport-specific routes and four million highlights recommended by the community worldwide. Using the "Open in komoot" function, content can be imported directly from ChatGPT into the komoot app transferred. There, users can save and edit routes or download them for offline navigation. The ChatGPT integration enables search queries by length, region, duration or type of sport. Users can also specify the number of route suggestions or choose whether results should appear as a list or in a map view. The search options go beyond the previous categories and filters of the komoot platform. As always, a precise prompt is a prerequisite for a good result.

The future of AI route planning?

The use of artificial intelligence to plan routes is not entirely new. AllTrails is also available via ChatGPT. Strava also offers an AI route planner. Strava uses AI algorithms to suggest popular and safe routes ("heat maps") based on user activity. The system can create circuits based on distance and type of sport (running, cycling). Theoretically, you can also ask for tips for routes directly in the AI chatbots from Google, Claude & Co. However, the answers do not provide a downloadable GPX track, but only descriptions or links to platforms. This diversions is not necessary when combining Komoot and the AI chatbot. For the language models, access to the verified GPS data is an advantage - the model can be trained in this way and perhaps provide GPX tracks itself in the future.
