Germany: Swabian Alb (GPS data)Photo: Matthias Rotter
The Swabian Alb rose out of the Jurassic Sea millions of years ago. Where the ocean once lapped against the steep banks, racing cyclists today find a marvellous climbing garden.

Seen from the north, the Swabian Alb is a high plateau that rises up from the Neckar - between Tuttlingen and the Nördlinger Ries in a 200 kilometre long ramp, the Albtrauf. Up to 400 metres in altitude have to be overcome on numerous "climbs". Cyclists are advised not to underestimate the climbing sections. Ramps such as the Ochsenwanger Steige climb mercilessly up to 18 per cent towards the sky, and then straight ahead. Gruelling! If you dare, you can include the climb in our tour suggestion around Teck Castle (and head towards Ochsenwang in Bissingen). The neighbouring Hepsisauer Steige is even more beautiful because of the view. Up to the start of the hairpin bends, you cycle on traffic-free paths, always with Teck Castle in view, one of numerous castles and palaces guarding the Albtrauf.
