Ssssssssroummm. And they are gone. Quickly and quietly. Above all, fast. They have come from Berlin, the track cyclists who are out on their road racers today. They crank their way through the avenues that provide shelter from the sun and wind. Lakes fly by, sometimes up a hill, sometimes a small mountain. In the middle of the pack: Jürgen Geschke, who everyone calls Tutti because of his Italian ancestors. In the 1970s, Geschke was a celebrated cyclist: twice world champion in tandem cycling, sprint world champion in 1977
Today, the 66-year-old runs a small bike shop in Wandlitz on the southern edge of the Schorfheide. We visit him there later: "Bike and action from the world champion" is written on the sign above the small grey house. When Jürgen Geschke thinks back to his own cycling career and the training rides, he goes into raptures: "Riding through the avenues was marvellous. The forests, the air - simply marvellous. The roads were beautifully smooth tarmac, even in GDR times, which was anything but a matter of course. We only had to be careful in the towns - because of the small cobbled streets," explains Gesch ke, with whom we would have liked to have stayed longer. But we want to go on, into the Schorfheide, and see if he was right to rave about it.
