Germany: RügenPhoto: Ralf Niemzig
Klaus Störtebeker was a pirate and adventurer - and, according to legend, a son of Rügen. If you want to explore Germany's largest island by road bike, you also need a sense of adventure, because it's not easy to find suitable roads. We have unearthed the treasure for you. (TOUR 9/2004)

No matter how tempting the road with its smooth tarmac may be - taking a quick turn usually doesn't work on Rügen. After just a few hundred metres, the glory can be over. Suddenly the German "Hell of the North" opens up, medieval cobblestones, more merciless for narrow tyres than the pavés at Paris-Roubaix. In response to the anxious question to the local "what's next here?", the old man sitting in his farm garden slowly takes his pipe out of his mouth, grins, scratches his beard and replies: "Well, my boy, it's shit for now. But it'll get better back there." The TOUR reporter's curiosity costs him two flat feet and a kind of shaking trauma. But it was worth it: on the two tours, there are only a few small, unavoidable intermediate sections over cobblestones.
