The local mountain for racing cyclists on Untersee "can be attacked from three sides", reveals Slim Gamh-Drid from Bohlingen, which lies at the foot of the 716 metre high ridge. "From Radolfzell in the north, Öhningen in the south and Wangen in the south-east." The 31-year-old from Baden with Tunisian roots chose the Schiener Berg for a world record attempt in August 2016: he climbed to the summit 100 times in 24 hours on a gravel path on his mountain bike. The 18,304 metres in altitude probably earned him an entry in the Guinness Book.
Gamh-Drid recommends the south-east ramp as the most beautiful ascent for racing cyclists. It starts on the shores of Untersee in the tranquil village of Wangen. Firstly, we enjoy the climb with views across the lake to the Glarus Alps in Switzerland. Scattered farms lie on the hillside, no sound disturbs the silence. As the road becomes narrower and narrower behind the village of Schienen, we begin to doubt whether we are still on the right track. Boundary stones on the verge show that, curiously, Swiss territory lies north of the Rhine here. According to the map, the path to Hemishofen in Switzerland should be tarmac. But at a historic half-timbered house in the middle of nowhere, the tarmac ends at the national border. A pretty little country lane leads into Switzerland. We dare to continue and after just under three kilometres we have asphalt under our tyres again.
