Anyone travelling by road bike between Saarland and France will see many similarities - and small differences. GPS data for two tours is available here, the full story in TOUR 10/2018

Tour 1 (85 kilometres, 1,000 metres in altitude, max. 14 % gradient)

Saar Loop

Although the route almost always runs along the Saar, the climbs up the hills along the river add up to quite a few metres in altitude. The path up to Orscholz is particularly long, but well worth it - as is the short detour to the viewpoint above the Saar loop. The way back is mostly along the Saar cycle path, although you will inevitably have to take roads with a little more traffic in some places.

Tour 2 (83 kilometres, 900 metres in altitude, max. 12 % gradient)

Borderland tour

This tour constantly alternates between Germany and France. You often don't notice the border crossing, in Leidingen it's a question of which side of the road you're on. Generally speaking, there is less traffic on the French side, but the tarmac is rougher. The ascent at Rammelfangen leads through dense forest, the second part of the tour to the region's most famous sights: the old French European radio station, the European monument with its far-reaching views and the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site.
