The Schlei is a picture-book landscape in northern Germany with picturesque villages and small towns. Where glacial ice and meltwater from the last ice age formed a valley, the Baltic Sea was able to penetrate deep inland. It is 43 kilometres from the coast to the end of the Schlei, where Schleswig, one of the oldest towns in Northern Europe, is located. Just opposite, in Haddebyer Noor, the Vikings established an important trading centre around 1,000 years ago. The pretty town of Schleswig is an ideal starting point for Schlei tours, both on the Angeln peninsula in the north and in Schwansen, south of the Baltic Sea fjord.
