To the west of Füssen, a narrow road winds its way to Unterdolden. The little road beautifully follows the gentle undulations of the landscape, leading through wet meadows where cotton grass blooms, white and airy like candy floss. In the meadows, the bells on the necks of the Allgäu brown cattle jingle. To the north, on two neighbouring hills, the medieval castle ruins of Eisenberg and Hohenfreyberg can be seen from afar. If you turn your head to the south, wooded mountains and pale limestone peaks border the horizon: the Ammergau Alps to the east, the Tannheim Mountains and Allgäu Alps further west. We rarely come across cars, but there are always groups of e-bikers with luggage who greet us in a friendly manner. The sprightly senior citizens tell us that they are following the Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path, which winds its way through the Bavarian Alpine foothills on the smallest of roads, keeping an appropriate distance from the high mountains.
