For King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Ammergau, the region between the Loisach and Lech rivers, was one of his favourite landscapes. The "Fairytale King" was so enamoured with the charm of the Alpine foothills that he had two castles built there, Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. But even almost 120 years after Ludwig's death, the region still enchants visitors. When visitors dressed in traditional costume stream out of Sunday mass to the ringing of the church bells, the Bavarian world seems pretty much in order.
Oberammergau, or "Ogau" as the locals call it, is also increasingly making a name for itself among cyclists. Mountain bikers have long since discovered the Ammergebirge for themselves, and recently more and more racing cyclists have been conquering the roads in Ludwig's fairytale landscape.
