Tall stature, red and white jersey, blue and red Pinarello racer: that must be him. "Hi, I'm Achim," my host introduces himself. "Thought I'd ride a bit towards you and give you some slipstream." Great, after 150 kilometres into a headwind! Behind Achim's wide cross, I ride the last 30 kilometres over the gentle waves of the Donauried. "The Ried was formed a good 14 million years ago by a meteorite impact," the giant calls to me over his shoulder, continuing his little lesson in local history and explaining the course of the Roman Limes in the region. The 39-year-old is a secondary school teacher and the first host on my tour from Munich to Hamburg, where I want to take part in the Cyclassics individual race. Five stages are planned to Hamburg - including overnight stays with cyclists that I found on the Internet. There, at http://www.quaeldich.de , racing cyclists have recently started offering free overnight accommodation to like-minded people in an accommodation ring. It was easy to find five racing cyclists whose homes are on the Munich-Hamburg axis.
The stages (all information can be found in the PDF download):
Day 1: Bavaria start: 179 kilometres, 1,020 vertical metres
Day 2: Franconia: 166 kilometres, 1,160 metres in altitude
Day 3: Queen's stage: 235 kilometres, 1,620 metres in altitude
Day 4: The long Leine: 120 kilometres, 420 metres in altitude
Day 5: Flat to Hamburg: 169 kilometres, 580 vertical metres
