Valley of Love - that sounds like a failed marketing name. The inhabitants of the Deggenhausertal can't really explain why their valley was given this sweet name. In the small community of Deggenhausen in Linzgau, there are several theories about the origin of the name: The farmers in the valley provided for women and children in need after the Second World War. Or: many a young man is said to have succumbed to the charms of the village beauties while travelling through and never returned home - married properly in the valley, of course. The origin of the name is probably much more obvious: namely that such a lovely spot on earth simply has to be called "Valley of Love".
With all due respect, the triangular sign with a red border and the inscription 30 per cent is the end of the fun. It stands as a memorial on the last section of the little road that swings up to the highest point flanking the Deggenhausertal valley. "The little road is an insider tip," reveals Roland Hecht from the "Seerose" cycling club in Friedrichshafen with a grin. "The Höchsten can be a tough one when it wants to be." In March 2006, the cycling club installed a permanent time trial course on the mountain, now known nationwide as the "Stoppomat".
