Germany: Inner German border (GPS data)Photo: Jörg Wenzel
9 November marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Wall. The 1,378 kilometre-long inner-German border is a thing of the past. On either side, the dust of history? We followed the former death strip from north to south. Eight days, sometimes on the west side, sometimes on the east side. A journey through the centre of Germany, which often still looks like the border.

The route along the former inner-German border leads from Travemünde to Hof. Not always directly along the 1,378 kilometre long border strip, but mostly close to the "anti-fascist protective wall", as the bigwigs in the GDR called the wall. You pass through a total of eight federal states (Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hesse and Bavaria). We have opted for the north-south passage in eight stages, but you can also start in the south. Everyone should decide on the length of the daily sections according to their mood or training form.
