The town's landmark is the 868 metre high Hohentwiel. The remains of a volcano that was active ten million years ago rise as a mighty block out of the gently undulating landscape. The hard rock defied the ice-age Rhine glacier and the subsequent erosion of the warm periods. At the top of the mountain once stood the most important of the numerous Hegau castles, which Napoleon had razed to the ground and of which only ruins remain today. From here you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of Lake Constance and, on a clear day, the Alps. If you turn to the north-west, you can see other volcanic mountains such as Hohenkrähen and Hohenstoffeln. More than a dozen of these cones rise up from the Hegau, and there is almost always a mostly ruined castle on their summits.
