Germany: Harz MountainsPhoto: Matthias Rotter
Germany's northernmost low mountain range culminates in the 1,141 metre high Brocken, the most popular excursion destination in the Harz Mountains. Cyclists will find the most beautiful routes away from the giant, partly on roads closed to motorised traffic and along the many reservoirs. (TOUR 3/2007)

A region with a good dozen reservoirs should actually encourage cyclists never to go on tour without a rain jacket. After all, the water reservoirs are an unmistakable sign of abundant precipitation, which mainly falls on the western slopes of the Harz Mountains. But on hot summer days, the lakes, which branch out like fjords in narrow valleys, also show their pleasant side when a pleasantly cool breeze blows around cyclists' noses. In addition, their deep blue colour refreshes the eye after several kilometres through dense forest - and a dip refreshes tired legs after climbing over the wooded ridges. Because as harmless as they may seem from a distance, three to four hundred metres in altitude are not uncommon in the Harz Mountains.
