Eastern Harz drawer. It contains the clichés: pensioners' paradise, knee breeches, coaches, Walpurgis celebrations. Road cyclists can close them again quickly. Because the roads are just right, as is the landscape. In the former mining region, you roll along on smooth tarmac, with constant ups and downs and no spectacular climbs or descents. Nevertheless, the altimeter has its work cut out for it in the heart of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world - much older than the Alps and the Himalayas. Around 350 million years ago, the Harz Mountains, which once towered as high as the Matterhorn, began to form. Over millions of years, the forces of the earth, wind and water transformed it into its present form: a mountain range that slopes steeply to the west and north-east and flattens out more gently to the south - intersected by numerous valleys formed by small rivers such as the Tyra.
You can find the entire article below as a PDF download with the following tours:
- Tour 1: Up the Brocken
Undulating, varied route with short climbs and descents - and a detour to the Brocken. This is only worthwhile when visibility is good, as the road is quite bumpy from Schierke.
- Tour 2: Harz scooter
A tour across the eastern Harz, with constant ups and downs, which adds up to quite a few metres in altitude. Occasionally longer climbs (for example from Stolberg).
GPS DATA: TOUR offers the tour data for free download. You can download the tracks in GPX format directly onto a GPS device or view them on your computer in Google Earth or Google Maps.
