Instead of travelling to Italy, our author prefers to travel around Germany in times of coronavirus. A good decision? GPS data is available here, the full story in TOUR 9/2021

Arrive when you want, move on when you feel like it: That's what camper life is all about. However, this freedom is not guaranteed during peak periods; in July and August, you may find yourself standing in front of a locked gate at some campsites without a reservation. Sites by lakes, rivers or the sea are particularly popular. Tip for last-minute travellers: the earlier you arrive on the day, the better your chances of finding a free pitch. We were travelling during the Whitsun holidays, so there are hardly any nasty surprises. As a general rule: if you can manage the time, travel anti-cyclically.

We were travelling in the border region of Hesse and Thuringia. You won't find any notable mountains or towns there. That's a good thing, because along the sparsely populated former border strip, cyclists can enjoy peace and quiet. This is followed by a transfer stage by bike to the next campsite. The prerequisite is that someone is driving the camper. The stage follows the Werra and Weser valleys downstream, but sets a challenging accent with the crossing of the Hoher Meißner.

Then we head west by motorhome to the Eidel. The Rursee is cut deep into the mountains of the North Eifel like a branching fjord. Steep banks and rugged mountains mean that you have to drive quite a long way round the lake, but also that the roads are constantly going up and down. This adds up to quite a few metres in altitude.

In contrast to the rugged northern half, the Eifel in the south has a gentler face. The landscape is more open, the view stretches further. And the weather also seems sunnier, perhaps because of the proximity to the vineyards on the Moselle. However, the stars of the region around Daun are the maars. Those circular, water-filled funnels of volcanic origin. You pass five of the famous maar lakes on our tour, as well as castles in Gerolstein and Manderscheid.
