Cyclists encounter the history of salt in many a bend in the south-eastern corner of Bavaria: as the route of the numerous historic brine pipelines or as an old kilometre stone in Ramsau, which indicated the distance to Reichenhall to the muleteers of the time. The Alpine foothills lie between the salt town of Reichenhall and Lake Waginger See, which is already part of Chiemgau. There, the network of low-traffic side roads is much denser than in the narrow mountain valleys. Pedalling through the countless hills, you become a wave rider - alone with yourself and nature. Sleepy villages nestle in the lowlands, often only the church tower and the top of the maypole can be seen rising above the lush meadows.
The deeper you go into Berchtesgadener Land, which juts out into Austria like a cone, the steeper the mountains become. The high alpine region is dominated by the 2,713 metre high Watzmann. For racing cyclists, the Rossfeld road, which winds its way up to 1,560 metres, marks the high point. No other public road in Germany is closer to heaven for mountain bikers.

The Rossfeld is a must for mountain bikers - but you should still have some energy left for the climb to the Schwarzeck.
- Tour 2: Alpine foothills
Even if there are no big-name mountains and the route to the north is not always easy to find via the smallest side roads and tarmac paths, the view of the mountains is to die for!
