While the last white of the ski slope on the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm turns to mud, spring is already showing off its bright colours around its Bavarian namesake. Hahnenkamm? Yes, you can also find it in southern Germany - in the Altmühltal Nature Park, not far from the small town of Treuchtlingen. As early as the end of April, or in May at the latest, the rape is bright yellow and the lilacs a delicate purple. It almost hurts the eyes, still used to the grey of winter, when the colours burst over the edge of the cycling glasses. The region is not exactly known for its brute charms: Treuchtlingen, Gunzenhausen, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Wassertrüdingen - names that sound like skat club excursions, Japanese tourists and sleepiness.
It really is quiet. And this is perhaps the greatest attraction of this two-day tour, which takes racing cyclists along lonely little roads and through many a pretty village off the beaten track.
