Behind the Ammersee, the hustle and bustle of the Munich region fades away
On the small roads from Munich to Lake Constance, the mountains are always in sight. There is plenty of time to enjoy the view as you drive through the undulating Alpine foothills.

Behind the Ammersee lies the gateway to a new world - at least as seen from Munich. If you climb up the small ramp to the west on the south-west shore in Dießen, you leave the hectic streets of the Munich area behind you, the excitement of the big city - and Munich's prices. Instead: small roads, hardly any cars, with the mountains peeking out again and again between forests and behind hilltops on the left. And after the first 60 kilometres, down-to-earth inns with wooden tables and red plastic chairs under large chestnut trees invite you to take a lunch break. Of course, you could do the 210 kilometres and 2,200 metres of ascent to Lake Constance in one day, but you don't have to. That's why I carry a small rucksack on my back with the essentials: toothbrush, flip-flops, a good bike lock and normal clothes. Today just under 140 kilometres, tomorrow just under 75, so that there is enough time for the return journey on the train.
