The plateau of the High Fens arches on the border between Germany and Belgium.
South of Aachen lies the "Hohes Venn - Eifel Nature Park", in which the Eifel National Park is embedded. The moors, forests and reservoirs of this sparsely populated region are still largely undiscovered by racing cyclists.

It is supposed to be an insider tip, an experience. Hidden away, not signposted and only known to those who know the area. The trendiest bar in the Eifel? No, it's a road through the forest, a mundane stretch of tarmac. Several cyclists in the region have raved about it as if it were their first childhood love. We want to get to know it. At the point described, we turn right off the main road 258 onto a narrow path to Dedenborn, which leads us into an old beech forest. A few rays of sunlight break through the leaves and bathe the forest in early autumn colours. We descend quickly - almost too quickly to capture all the fleeting impressions: the sweet smell of wilting leaves and rotting wood, the screeching of the buzzard high above the treetops and the view over the Rur valley. Down below, on the steep banks of the Rur reservoir, perhaps the ten most beautiful kilometres in the Eifel lie behind us.
