Solitary tours in the sparsely populated region through the Steinwald and in the Upper Palatinate Forest along the German-Czech border. GPS data is available here, the full story in TOUR 9/2020

Tour 1: Mini mountains Stone forest (79 kilometres, 900 metres in altitude, max. 8 % gradient)

The Steinwald mini-mountain range reaches 946 metres at the Platte viewing tower. However, only mountain or gravel bikers can get there. The road three kilometres east of the Platte only reaches 765 metres. First you roll south of Wiesau and turn onto the Steinwald cycle path, which winds its way past ponds and pools on beautiful farm tracks. Later, the route runs along an old railway line. From Erbendorf, the route turns northwards and climbs the heights of the Steinwald. At the top, the landscape opens up and you can catch a glimpse of the neighbouring Fichtelgebirge mountains on the descent to Marktredwitz. The last 24 kilometres lead through the hills back to Mitterteich.

Tour 2: To the Czech border (100 kilometres, 1,180 metres in altitude, max. 7 % gradient)

It is only ten kilometres from Mitterteich to the Czech Republic. A large part of the route leads along the border through the Upper Palatinate Forest. Two churches worth seeing await before the solitude: The mighty collegiate basilica in Waldsassen and, a few kilometres further on, the fairytale pilgrimage church of the Most Holy Trinity, known as "Kappl" for short. From Waldsassen onwards, the profile becomes undulating but never difficult. In Neualbenreuth, it is worth making a detour to the Grenzland observation tower, which is located very close to the geographical centre of Europe - or rather, one of the points that claims to be. After passing the Ahornberg, the roof of the tour at almost 800 metres above sea level, there is a brisk panoramic descent to Tirschenreuth. And finally, Falkenberg Castle on the Waldnaab awaits.
