With ten newly curated gravel bike tours, Chiemgau is positioning itself as a versatile area in the foothills of the Alps. They range from 45 to 231 kilometres and cover different levels of difficulty. The "Chiem Xtreme" tour is considered the sporting flagship: with 231 kilometres and 2180 metres of elevation gain, it leads around the entire Chiemgau region. What all routes have in common is the combination of an intensive nature experience and structured training options.
Chiemgau in Upper Bavaria is developing into a gravel bike region in the foothills of the Alps and is expanding its offering with ten new tours. The routes offer gravel fans a wide choice between relaxed lake tours and challenging mountain trails with lengths between 45 and 86 kilometres. Each route has been designed with its own character - from relaxed after-work enjoyment to challenging training. As a special highlight for ambitious gravel bike riders, the region presents the "Chiem Xtreme" tour with 231 kilometres, which runs along the outer lines of all other tours and thus practically encircles the entire Chiemgau region. According to the organisers, the tours combine challenging training sessions with the unique natural experience of the Chiemgau region, characterised by the constant presence of the mountain backdrop and sweeping views over Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See. All routes will be available for download as GPX tracks on the official website and on popular tour portals from the start of 2026.
The "Chiem Xtreme" is the longest and most challenging tour, covering 231 kilometres and 2,180 metres in altitude. It runs along the outer edges of the nine other Chiemgau tours and combines lakes, mountains and cultural highlights into a full-day tour for ambitious cyclists. From the starting point in Übersee, the route continues via Chieming, Seebruck, Gollenshausen and Seeon, among others, through northern and eastern Chiemgau, along the Salzach to Teisendorf. Via Höglwörth, Inzell, Ruhpolding and Reit im Winkl, the route finally runs through the Achental valley back to Übersee. The tour offers a wide range of lake and mountain views as well as cultural stops such as the Seeon and Höglwörth monasteries.
The "Holy Roler" is particularly suitable for culture-loving gravel bike riders, leading 57 kilometres through one of the quiet and impressive landscapes of northern Chiemgau. With an elevation gain of 380 metres and a riding time of around three hours, this tour is designed for pleasure-oriented cyclists. The start and finish point is Altenmarkt, from where the route runs via Seebruck and Breitbrunn back to the starting point. Along the route are two important cultural and historical sites, Seeon Monastery and Baumburg Monastery, which invite you to linger.
The "Lake'n Lazy" tour stands for relaxed enjoyment and, at 45 kilometres and 300 metres in altitude, is the shortest of the routes presented. It takes around two hours through one of the most laid-back corners of Chiemgau - always accompanied by lake views and a summer atmosphere. The starting and finishing point is Übersee, from where the route continues via Feldwies along the Chiemsee to Chieming, to the Tüttensee and via Bernhaupten back to Übersee. Along the way, there are always sweeping views of the lake, complemented by sections of beach and beach bars. This tour is particularly suitable for relaxed afternoons, warm summer evenings and all those who want to experience the Chiemgau from its relaxed, enjoyable side.
Another relaxed option is the "Lake Loop" tour, which covers 79 kilometres and 600 metres in altitude and connects two lakes in one loop. The approximately five-hour tour leads from Traunstein via Chieming and Stein an der Traun to Tengling and Waging and back to Traunstein. The wide views over Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waging are particularly attractive and characterise this tour.
The Chiemgau region offers several challenging tours for ambitious gravel bike riders. The "Wadl Warrior" tour is a challenge with 86 kilometres and 1,210 metres of elevation gain with a riding time of around six hours. The route leads from Inzell via Ruhpolding, Reit im Winkl, Unterwössen, Marquartstein, Staudach-Egerndach, Bergen, Siegsdorf and Hammer back to Inzell. The close views of the Chiemgau mountains are particularly attractive.
The "Highland Hustle" tour promises a sporting challenge with 57 kilometres, 970 metres of altitude and a riding time of around 3.5 hours. The route leads from Ruhpolding via Hörgering, Siegsdorf, Teisendorf, Höglwörth, Anger and Inzell back to Ruhpolding. Panoramic views of the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden mountains reward the effort.
The "Everything Alzride" tour leads along the Alz, combining river and flow with gravel cycling over 64 kilometres and 570 metres in altitude. The 3.5-hour tour starts in Trostberg and leads via Schnaitsee, Obing, Griessee, Seeon, Truchtlaching to Altenmarkt. Refreshment stops include Leela's shop-café in Schnaitsee, the kiosk at Griessee and the Camba Bavaria brewery in Seeon.
