The carbon age has differentiated the racing bike more finely than ever before. Today, there are special bikes for long distances as well as aerodynamic bikes for racing against the wind, lightweight bikes for the mountains and now even more racers for all types of unpaved surfaces.
Some people feel overwhelmed by the variety of products on offer and the constant stream of new trends, and wish for the time when a racing bike was simply a racing bike. The five titanium bikes in this test represent the timeless, simple and durable principle of the classic racer par excellence.
They are a counter-design to the increasingly fast-moving and confusing market of innovations: Racing bike frames made of titanium, round metal tubes, welded by hand; without aerodynamic frippery, overly sensitive lightweight construction or complicated integrated components. Frames with a focus on clear, timeless design, reliable function, durability and accuracy of fit, perhaps even customised. These are all features that are still top of the list for many road bike buyers. Our photo gallery provides an initial overview of the extent to which the various manufacturers can fulfil this requirement.
