Test 2015 - Carbon frame: AX Lightness Vial Evo D Di2
Like the saddle, handlebars, stem, bottle cage and rims, the frame of the Vial evo D is manufactured in Creußen, Upper Franconia. This is where the company AX Lightness is based, which has been designing carbon components for cycling and motorsport since 2002 and producing them in elaborate autoclave production.

The frameset is characterised by two outstanding features: its spectacular weight and excellent comfort values. The good damping on the saddle is largely due to the filigree seat post. The Scapula CT fork from THM combines maximum lateral stiffness with one of the best comfort values we have ever measured. The most amazing quality of the bike: you quickly forget what a featherweight you're sitting on. The bike feels safe and stable in all riding situations. The weight of 5.4 kilos is remarkable, also because the Dura-Ace Di2 groupset is actually considered a heavyweight in lightweight construction circles. With SRAM Red and tubular tyres, the bike would easily come in under five kilos. This draws attention to the intelligently designed folding tyre-compatible wheels, which combine low weight with good stiffness. Going downhill, we only noticed minimal brake rubbing, but this was problem-free. The thin matt paint reveals the different carbon structures and emphasises the impression of a purist racing bike. Compared to the Trek and Cervélo models, the frame set is still relatively inexpensive at € 3,790 including the THM fork.

CONCLUSION Beguiling lightweight construction, made in Germany: spectacular weight, solid stiffness values, outstanding comfort, intelligently designed components
