Fausto Pinarello stands at the entrance to the new commercial building in Villorba near Treviso, which the racing bike manufacturer moved into just a few months ago. The spacious, modern architecture shows: Pinarello is planning for the future and anticipates significant growth in the coming years. Even now, a lack of orders does not seem to be a problem. Iron baskets are stacked several metres high with brand new, as yet unpainted carbon frames - reportedly more than 3,000 - waiting to be painted in the ultra-modern paint shop. The 44-year-old is quick to explain where the frames come from. "Nobody in Europe builds such highly technical carbon frames. You can only get this quality in China."
Pinarello and frames from China? This news may come as a shock to some racing bike fans. Wasn't the brand the epitome of the Italo racer, made in Italy of course? Pinarello had also clung to this idea for a long time. Just five years ago, it was the only racing bike manufacturer in Europe to rely on magnesium, the light metal of the future at the time. But the investment in the difficult processing of the material was not worth it. Too few buyers wanted to fork out more than 3,000 euros for the "Dogma" magnesium frame. In times of need, the company boss therefore decided to make a radical cut three years ago: he gave up frame production at the old site in Treviso and relocated production entirely to China. Pinarello only continues to build the "Dogma" in Italy, at least as long as demand justifies it.
