The green, white and red Italian tricolour is emblazoned on the top tube, while the fork and chainstay gleam in shiny chrome. Some Italo fans may be shocked to learn that the Steel Master 65 is welded in Taiwan. This is where Alfredo Gios relocated production in 2010 to breathe new life into the brand, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. This reorganisation has done no harm to the frame, which is surprisingly stable to ride given the thin tubes, but heavy. On the contrary: the clean weld seams are immaculately finished and the price of €1,199 for the frameset, including the Campagnolo headset, is fair. Purists might be bothered by the combination of Ahead stem and one-inch fork. However, this is only an option for the test size 60 shown here. All smaller sizes are also available with threaded forks for steerer stems. The Super Record anniversary groupset from Campagnolo was chosen by Gios importer Frank Cino as suitable equipment for the anniversary model. With a mechanical Athena groupset, builds from around € 2,500 are possible.
