Watermelons are aptly named: a watermelon is 95 per cent water - no other fruit or vegetable can compete with it. For this reason, they are ideal as a refreshing thirst quencher.

Watermelon already popular with Egyptians

The high water content of watermelons was already appreciated by the Egyptians 4000 years ago, as illustrations on tombs from this period show. They also treated kidney patients with melons - due to their high water and low acid content, watermelons are very suitable for cleansing the kidneys of harmful substances.

Watermelons originally come from southern Africa. The Moors brought them to Spain in the twelfth century. The green balls can weigh up to 20 kilograms.
