Road cycling is generally regarded as a sport that is easy on the joints - but many cyclists can tell you a thing or two about it when their knees chirp or their necks make funny noises.

And there are also said to be a few pedalers who occasionally do other, less joint-friendly sports. This time, we accompanied the autumn-winter switch to running with a dietary supplement called CH Alpha Sport - mainly in the hope of hearing fewer grunts of protest from our knee joints. The 25 millilitre ampoules contain a mix of collagen peptides, magnesium and silicic acid, supplemented with vitamin C, panthotenic acid and zinc. Collagen in particular, a protein building block that is important for ligaments, tendons and cartilage, is said to be good for stressed joints, bones and muscles. However, this does not happen overnight: the manufacturer itself advises at least three months of daily intake before the beneficial effect can be felt. Firstly, this is quite expensive, as a monthly pack of 30 drinking ampoules costs 52.80 euros (between 33 and 42 euros in some online pharmacies), and secondly, it requires some discipline to actually drink one of these mini bottles every day.

Our experience after three months in which we emptied two boxes of 30 ampoules each: The early-bird runs were a little easier on the feet, but this was probably mainly due to the fact that the test person was carrying a few kilos less than in the previous winter. However, the pulling and stinging in his ligaments and joints did not decrease significantly. It's high time to switch back to the familiar position on the two-wheeled joint protector ...
