Activity trackers are currently all the rage in the fitness scene. But do the digital activity trackers for the wrist also have advantages for cyclists? We tried out the "Misfit Flash" for a few weeks. The device can be used in conjunction with a smartphone (iOS or Android from version 4.3) and the corresponding app. After simple synchronisation, the app tells you how much you have moved, how many calories you have burned or how long you have slept.
The Misfit Flash reliably registers running, walking or climbing stairs. However, you should not expect the tracker to recognise different types of movement independently and accurately. It cannot distinguish between running and cycling. However, if you start (and stop) a training session in the app, the duration of the cycling, running or swimming unit is displayed. Otherwise, at the end of the day you are shown an undifferentiated collection of movements.
The result is also influenced by where you wear the tracker. On the wrist, the Flash documents a significantly higher activity level than with the clip supplied on the belt or in the trouser pocket. On the other hand, it records the sleep rhythm more accurately when worn on the wrist.
The Flash draws its power from a button cell, which lasts up to six months according to the manufacturer. The specific benefits for cyclists are limited; however, if you want to document your daily routine and monitor your eating behaviour, for example, devices such as the Misfit Flash are practical companions. This activity tracker is not only available in black or grey, but also in fashionable colours such as fuchsia or lemon yellow.
