Test of the Tacx Neo Smart 2 and Neo2T smart trainers. What can the top models of the smart high-end roller trainer do?

Topics in this article

With the Neo 2, the Dutch family-owned company Tacx is relying on the Predecessor model tried and tested strengths: Sophisticated control technology and modern design instead of a large flywheel mass. This ensures a realistic, comfortable ride in almost all cases. However, if you skip a few pedals and then start pedalling again, the resistance seems a little too strong until the trainer adjusts.

Driving experience of the Taxc Neo Smart 2

The lateral flex of the wheel suspension, which allows you to lean slightly to one side, was particularly noticeable when riding in the cradle. This allows you to leave the otherwise rigid training position from time to time. However, this flex does not offer the wobbling effect of rocking plates, platforms that offer significantly more horizontal and vertical room for manoeuvre - and cost extra. As usual with Tacx devices, the power measurement is very accurate and the volume is within a reasonable range: at low speeds, the Neo Smart 2 hums very quietly and even at higher speeds the noise level only increases moderately. Cool feature: The trainer does not necessarily require a power connection. If the Neo Smart 2 not connected to the power grid, the driver generates the power himself!

Update for the Tacx Neo 2T Smart

The Neo 2T Smart is supposed to be the update for winter 2019/2020. The housing looks the same, the trainer runs similarly smoothly. However, the accuracy test is astonishing: we measured an average deviation of 12 watts - eight watts more than the original Neo Smart model from 2018. However, the bonus compared to the two older models is the improved Roadfeel feature, which transmits different surfaces to the trainer in a very realistic and differentiated way - a great additional benefit, especially when riding on Zwift.

The scope of delivery includes special quick-release skewers and an adapter set for thru axles as well as a front wheel holder. You only have to buy the cassette yourself. As otherwise only the feet need to be folded out, the bike can be mounted within a few minutes. The disadvantage of the product design: The Neo Smart 2 is difficult to carry as it does not have a handle.
