The Saris roller is not a real smart trainer, but a classic hydraulic brake. The only "smart" feature is the enclosed sensor, which records either the speed of the rear wheel or the cadence. In Zwift, a pedalling power is estimated from the rear wheel speed, but this is quite far off the mark (+21/-12 percent). Furthermore, the brake is not controlled by the software, but purely by the rider depending on the speed. This approach is not suitable for twisting and e-racing.
The braking effect of the roller is heavily dependent on the speed. Slow, powerful pedalling is not possible; at 50 revolutions per minute, a maximum of 170 watts is possible in high gear. With a higher frequency, however, the resistance increases sharply and it becomes louder. In a sprint, we were able to coax just under 1,000 watts out of the small brake, with no slippage. Despite the small flywheel mass, the ride feel is okay. The extremely stiff quick adjustment of the clamping mechanism is unpleasant.
