The British brand Rapha stands for racing bike products as well as targeted lifestyle marketing. The collaboration with Bang and Olufsen, a Danish manufacturer of consumer electronics in the high-price segment, therefore fits perfectly into the brand image. According to the manufacturer, the "Beoplay E 8 Sport" model with Rapha lettering is a limited edition, but does not differ formally from other headphones in the Beoplay E8 Sport range.
Listening to music while cycling? Not a good idea on the road due to the traffic alone, but during strenuous roller training it can be the ideal motivational aid to get through the energy-sapping workout. Accordingly, the Beoplay E 8 sports headphones are part of Rapha's indoor collection, which was launched at the beginning of 2020 and also includes shorts, a training shirt, socks and a cap.
At €350 RRP, the headphones cost more than all other products in Rapha's indoor collection combined. Nevertheless, the limited edition was temporarily sold out shortly after the launch in autumn 2020, but is now available again in various online shops
Getting started was difficult: as the headphones are not automatically in pairing mode, you first have to press and hold the touch surfaces (the outer sides with the company logos) until the LEDs light up blue. This did not work with the first device sent to us, even after several attempts, but the second test device was configured without any problems.
When the Beoplay E 8 sports headphones are paired with a smartphone or watch, they impress with their rich sound and smooth operation at the touch of a finger. The two integrated microphones on each side have a noise-cancelling function that effectively blocks out external noises such as voices and traffic noise. This is a particularly useful technology for phone calls. At the same time, when jogging in the park at medium volume, other noises such as bicycle bells or loud shouts can always be heard clearly, even with the headphones in use.
The Beoplay E 8 Sport headphones have certified water protection - anyone who has ever ridden intervals on the roller knows why. According to the standard, the headphones can even be briefly immersed in water, although we did not check this for the test. However, the headphones passed the sweat test with flying colours. Different ear moulds and fins allow them to be adapted to different ear cups. The battery performance is a real statement with seven hours of uninterrupted playback at a moderate noise level and three additional charges in the case according to the manufacturer. We were able to complete three two-hour rolling sessions without recharging without the performance of the headphones diminishing.
