Individual test: Kettler Ergorace exercise bike
The new Ergorace has an 18-kilogram flywheel with an eddy current brake that enables resistances of between 25 and 1,000 watts.

With the "Ergorace", Kettler is launching a new, high-quality cycle ergometer that is designed to make professional cycle training possible at a price of 1,399 euros. The most important criterion for this is the 18-kilogram flywheel of the solid device, which enables resistances of between 25 and 1,000 watts using an eddy current brake. The clad handlebar unit allows the top handlebar and triathlon position, but the armrests are not adjustable and you bump your knees against the handlebar cladding when pedalling out of the saddle. The saddle and handlebars can be adjusted in steps of three and two centimetres respectively using adjusting screws, which makes precise adjustment of the riding position somewhat more difficult. The fact that the seat height (adjustable between 59 and 91 centimetres) always changes at the same time as the seat angle is adjusted via a slide also contributes to this. The construction is somewhat unstable in this area, and the saddle wobbles even with slight lateral pressure. The pedalling feel is very realistic thanks to the large flywheel, although the lateral pedal distance of 20 centimetres (15 centimetres is normal on the bike) takes some getting used to. The almost silent running of the device is pleasant.

A large display provides clear information on all training parameters, various training programmes are integrated and personal data such as threshold values or intensity ranges can be set. The "Ergorace" can be connected to a PC via a USB cable, allowing training laps to be tracked in "Magic Maps", for example. The menu navigation is intuitive, the integrated programmes offer variations from endurance to intensive strength training. The contact surface measures 131x54 centimetres, and the device is 1.26 metres high overall. Two castors make the "Ergorace" mobile, while the height adjustment on two feet compensates for uneven floors.

PLUS: solid; operation; pedalling feel

MINUS: Seat and handlebar position not infinitely adjustable; saddle clamp and handlebar unit with weaknesses; wide pedal spacing
