I get a rash after long rides where the helmet comes into contact with my scalp. What could be causing my skin reaction and what can I do about it?

Question from G. Antweiler, Cologne: I never ride without a helmet, even in the heat of summer, so I feel safer. However, for some time now I have been experiencing discomfort in certain areas of my head (especially on the sides above my temples) - after long rides I get a very itchy and sometimes weeping rash where the helmet comes into contact with my scalp. What could be the cause of my skin reaction and what can I do about it?

Advice from the expert: A contact allergy is most likely the cause of your symptoms. The skin usually reacts to a rubber component or textile dye. The eczema reaction is favoured by sweat and skin contact with the helmet parts, as the allergy-triggering substances can penetrate the skin more easily. An irritative, non-allergic reaction of the skin is also conceivable due to the long-lasting effect of the pH-acidic sweat, perhaps also in combination with friction if the helmet does not fit perfectly. Once eczema has developed, a bacterial infection can also develop. This can usually be recognised by a yellowish, purulent coating, whereas eczema alone tends to be clearly oozing. If the symptoms persist, you should consult a dermatologist. He or she should decide what to do, for example a short-term treatment with a cream containing cortisone. In the long term, an allergy test could be useful to find out the triggers for your skin reaction. Tip: It may be helpful to replace the helmet pads (accessories). Lighter colours contain fewer allergenic substances. If necessary, you can also cover existing pads with soft white cotton.
