Answer from Dr Merkl:
The World Health Organisation defines high blood pressure as values above 140 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic. Anyone with values in this range (so-called borderline hypertension) can do endurance sports such as cycling without medication, especially as sport helps to normalise blood pressure as a therapeutic measure. Endurance training at around 70 per cent of the circulatory capacity (basic endurance range) can make medication superfluous as a therapy for high blood pressure in the first stage. In the third stage of hypertension (with values above 180:120), however, exercise is absolutely prohibited. You can only start exercising again slowly after medication and in consultation with your doctor. Clarify which category you belong to and adjust your training accordingly.
