Cycling with contact lensesPhoto: Tour
When I go cycling with contact lenses, my vision deteriorates drastically afterwards. I don't have these problems with glasses. Why is that?

Answer from Dr Merkl:

In principle, lenses are more suitable for cycling than glasses because they do not restrict the natural field of vision. Lens wearers experience problems when the lens dries out due to draughts and wind and is thus pressed firmly against the eye. The transport of oxygen via the tear fluid is restricted, water accumulates in the corneal tissue, it swells and visual acuity is reduced. This effect is intensified by the fact that lactate (lactic acid) also forms in the eye during sporting activity. Cyclists who ride at high power for long periods of time should therefore lubricate their eyes with artificial tears (eye drops) at regular intervals, keep the eye moist by blinking frequently and wear cycling goggles that protect as well as possible against the wind.
