The Italian clothing manufacturer Santini has been the official clothing supplier of the Eroica cycling event, which is popular with retro fans, since 2015. The race for everyone with its historic charm celebrated its premiere in 1997 in the town of Gaiole in the picturesque Chianti region of Tuscany. In 2024, the race will kick off on the fifth of October.
The original event, of which there are already many offshoots in other countries such as Cuba, Germany and Japan, takes place every year in October and attracts participants from all over the world. The routes run along the famous "strade bianche", the white gravel roads of Tuscany. The Eroica offers different route lengths to suit all abilities, from 38 kilometres to 205 kilometres.
Participants may only start with racing bikes that were manufactured before 1987 with the steel frames typical of this era, frame shift levers on the down tube, external brake and shift cables, tubular tyres and rim brakes, although newly built retro-style bikes are also permitted. The clothing should also be made according to the historical model, preferably from wool or cotton; elastic material, such as the spandex commonly used today, is not permitted, but blended fabrics based on merino wool are.
In 2024, the collection specially designed for the Eroica by the family-run company from Bergamo consists of the Original Wool, Modern Wool and Casual lines and includes "Eroica Approved" clothing, i.e. clothing that is permitted during the event - without elastane.
A few examples: The Gaiole and Vino jerseys, as well as the Spazio jersey already included in the 2023 collection, feature vintage details such as mother-of-pearl buttons on the back pockets and metal zips, which are intended to evoke the classic style of old cycling jerseys. These jerseys are "Eroica Approved" and may be worn at Eroica events. These wool jerseys are made from a blend of merino wool and polyester and thus resemble modern microfibre clothing with modern functionality in a classic retro design. The Santini Sera Jersey is available from Bobshop as a set together with the Sera Bib Shorts.
In order to be able to present this chic style away from the saddle, Santini has designed a line that transports this zeitgeist into everyday life. The casual collection includes a hoodie, T-shirts and crew-neck sweatshirts in three colours - perfect for anyone who wants to add a touch of cycling style to their everyday wardrobe.
