The Turmberg race in Karlsruhe has become a classic for cycling fans and mountain runners. On 25 May 2025, the competition will enter its 22nd edition. Online registration is already open. The route leads over 1.8 kilometres and 120 metres in altitude up the Turmberg, with gradients of up to 13 percent to overcome. Last year, the event set a new record with over 400 participants. Dominik Benz from the organisation team advises people to register quickly: "When the places are gone, they're gone." Late registrations on race day are only possible if there are still places available.
The centrepiece of the Turmberg race is the bike race. Participants qualify for the finals in an individual time trial in a preliminary race. The fastest cyclists then compete in three men's finals, while the women fight for the title of mountain queen in a final race. A mountain run takes place at the same time. After a mass start, the runners will walk up the almost two-kilometre route. Particularly ambitious athletes have the option of registering for both the bike race and the mountain run. "The bike and run races are a challenge in themselves," explains Dominik Benz. "If you want to go the extra mile, you can register for both the bike race and the mountain run."
The entry fees for the Turmberg Race 2025 have been deliberately kept low. The bike race costs 15 euros, the mountain run 10 euros. There is a discount for double registration for both disciplines, so that a total of 20 euros is payable. Participants under the age of 14 also receive an age discount on the entry fee. Scoring is organised in different age groups and per discipline. There is also a special classification for the best teams. These diverse categories allow athletes of different performance levels to compete with like-minded people and celebrate success. The race is also a good test to see how effective the Training at the start of the season.
A special feature of the Turmberg race is the trailer race, which, according to Dominik Benz, is an insider tip for many spectators along the route. Here, participants compete with bicycle trailers in which at least one child has to sit. "You have to manage your strength particularly well, after all you're pedalling for two!" explains Benz. This discipline not only represents an additional sporting challenge, but also provides entertainment and promotes the family character of the event.
The Turmberg race offers a supporting programme in addition to the sporting competitions. On the summit of the Turmberg, which offers a view over the whole of Karlsruhe, guests can watch the exciting finishes. Food and drink will be on offer to cater for all tastes. In addition, various stands will provide information about cycling and running.
