The cycle marathon is known above all for the beautiful and idyllic landscapes through which the routes pass. But don't be put off, because it's not just about the views: There have been exciting competitions between riders on all routes in recent years. In imperial weather, Max Kuen in the men's race and Monika Fritz in the women's race beat off the competition on the marathon circuit last year.
"Last year, we achieved a record number of more than 900 participants and were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic feedback we received from both the athletes and the spectators. It really was a celebration for everyone involved," said a delighted Georg Hörhager, Chairman of TVB Kufstein about the Kufsteinerland Cycle Marathon 2022.
At 120 kilometres in length and 1800 metres in altitude, the marathon lap is the most challenging lap you can ride in the Kufsteinerland Cycle Marathon. The start and finish is the upper town square in Kufstein. From there, the race gets off to a sporty start with a climb into the Thiersee Valley. Up there, riders have a wonderful view of Lake Thiersee, which is located in front of the local mountain Pendling. The panorama of the Kaiser Mountains also leaves a lasting impression. Afterwards, the route is relatively flat for the riders towards Lake Reintal before they face another strenuous climb: On a 3.5-kilometre section towards Brandenberg, the riders have to climb 400 metres in altitude. Once at the top, there is a return towards Kufstein, with a few final climbs.
A little more relaxed, but still challenging, is the 95-kilometre lake circuit, which involves climbing 1160 metres in altitude. The big difference to the marathon circuit is the omission of the second major climb towards Brandenberg. Instead of the climb, the riders turn left towards Rattenberg, from where the route back to Kufstein is the same.
If this route is still a bit too big for you or if you simply value the view more than the competition, the panoramic route is just the thing for you (even if there are still head-to-head races here). Without any major climbs (400 metres in altitude), the riders ride 48 kilometres through the mountain landscape. Compared to the Lakes Tour, the first major climb towards Thiersee is also omitted here. In addition, the riders do not ride as far as Rattenberg, but "only" as far as Breitenbach, where they turn round. Unlike the longer laps, the Inn is not crossed here.
As the event is already taking place next Sunday, 3 September, the registration deadline is approaching. Spontaneous cyclists can register for one of the three routes of the Kufsteinerland Cycle Marathon up to and including Thursday 31 August. Participation costs 65 euros. The starting places are also limited to 1000 - so make sure you get one of the last places now!
In addition to the actual bike race, visitors can also get their money's worth this coming Saturday. They will be able to cycle in the Kultur Quartier Kufstein and get valuable tips on repairing bikes at the "mechanic workshop". A visit to Kufstein is also worthwhile for those who are not starting on Sunday, as the bike expo is taking place at the same time as the race. A culinary highlight awaits cycling fans at the pasta party.
