A fatal accident led to the 51st Gippingen Cycling Days being cancelled at the weekend. There was a serious crash at the Axpo Aare Rhein Classics.

According to the organiser, four riders crashed in Böttstein in the Mandacherstrasse area. Three of them were taken to hospital with moderate injuries. One rider sustained serious injuries and had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter. He succumbed to his injuries there. The organiser then cancelled the following races.

The Brugg-Zurzach public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the accident and one of the people involved has been remanded in custody. It is currently being investigated whether the racer caused the crash. According to the Aargauer Zeitung newspaper, "criminal proceedings have been opened against him for possible intentional homicide, possibly negligent homicide and grievous bodily harm, and an application for remand in custody for three months has been submitted to the compulsory measures court".
