The Alpenbrevet is the Olympus of the top tour festivals, both in terms of length and metres in altitude. Meiringen's main street is buzzing from six in the morning. The girls and boys from silver to gold to platinum, who have travelled from all over the world, look for a place at the front for the mass start. The kilometre-long Tatzelwurm starts to move and remains compact until it reaches the Grimselstrasse. Motorised early risers notice straight away: today the numbers are reversed and they are being polite. Whether three, four or five passes: from one to the next, the procession fluctuates between power and elegance, between streams of sweat and purple heads. All three variants come together for the grand finale on the Susten Pass. Here, heroes pant, dancers sweat and those who have been left behind mourn in general suffering. The wind howls in the summit tunnel of the last pass, and it sounds like pity. But on the descent from Susten at the latest, the wind whistles a triumphal march, and in Meiringen the feelings of happiness prevail.
