"I would like to thank the students who represented our sport in a very effective way," said Matthias Zöll, Managing Director of the German Triathlon Union (DTU), very satisfied after the competitions in Berlin. "After the two successful demonstration competition days, we as the DTU are hoping for permanent inclusion in the school sports competition Jugend trainiert für Olympia."
The best weather conditions and an impressive backdrop made the national final of Jugend trainiert für Olympia a great experience for the triathletes who travelled to Berlin. The spectators didn't regret coming either, as both the individual races and the team relay offered excellent sport and great entertainment.
The state winners from a total of 14 federal states first competed in individual races over the distances of 200 metres swimming, 3000 metres cycling and 1000 metres running. On the following day, the 2011 overall winners were determined over these distances in mixed relay teams.
"This format was really exciting and varied," said a delighted Mirco Beyer, who is responsible for youth work at the DTU. There was no getting past the young athletes from the Neubrandenburg Sports High School from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on both days. Second and third place went to pupils from Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium Weimar (Thuringia) and Ohm Gymnasium from Erlangen (Bavaria).
Christian Prochnow, the sponsor of the triathlon demonstration at Jugend trainiert für Olympia, was waiting for the participants at the finish line. "Watching the young pupils compete in a triathlon is a huge pleasure for anyone interested in sport."
