Hundreds of thousands of cyclists document their rides on Strava and use their data to paint a detailed picture of how people cycle in Germany. We show the digital maps of the ten most popular regions

Strava is a social network for (cycling) athletes where you can document and analyse your sporting activities in a variety of ways. You can compete with other athletes or against yourself for the best times on customisable route sections. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Strava is aiming to reach 1 million members, who uploaded 6.2 million activities in 2016*. However, the cycling data is not only interesting from a sporting perspective. Traffic and city planners can also use the collected GPS tracks - Strava calls them heat maps - to see and assess which roads and paths are used by commuters on their way to school, university or work, both within a region and down to individual streets, and where more tourist or sporty routes run. We show the "heat maps" of the ten largest or most frequented cycling regions in Germany

* Survey period 1 October 2015 - 1 October 2016
