The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic coincided with a significant increase in outdoor activities in Germany: in March 2020, Strava's forecasts were exceeded by 45%. In Strava's cycling segment, this growth was even greater: German cyclists covered an impressive 63% more kilometres in 2020 than in 2019: from 356 million to 581 million kilometres. The altitude metres covered increased by 52%: from 3.3 billion to 5.0 billion altitude metres. The growth shows a clear difference between the genders. 49.5% of registered men cycled more and more often than in the previous year, while the figure for women was an impressive 91.5%! According to Strava, the cancellation of the big races also led to greater competition and more frequent changes in the Queen and King of the Mountain rankings. Even more significant, however, is the fivefold increase in Everesting attempts by cyclists who were only competing against themselves.
