All uploaded bike rides in Brandenburg reached an average speed of 24.4 km/h, putting the state ahead of Burgenland and Bremen in Austria. In terms of the number of bike rides, however, North Rhine-Westphalia was in the lead: 1,284,685 bike rides were recorded and uploaded to Strava by the beginning of December, followed by Bavaria (1,070,294) and Baden-Württemberg (993,624).
This year, 14 million bike rides were uploaded throughout Germany. The total distance added up to 383.7 million kilometres. It is not only athletes, but also many commuters who collected kilometres on Strava. While in 2016 there were still 1.6 billion commuting kilometres (cyclists/pedestrians/runners) worldwide, the figure has now risen to 2.0 billion kilometres. In purely mathematical terms, this corresponds to a CO2 saving of 453,000 tonnes. In Germany, the average commuting distance by bike was 15.3 kilometres.
