An industrial backdrop, gravel tracks and a slag heap as a vantage point: Gravel Ground has established itself in Herten as a leading gravel event in Germany. You’d best open your calendar app straight away and mark 10–12 September 2027 in your diary.
The Expo, held on the grounds of the Ewald colliery, has always been the centrepiece of the event. At the 2026 edition, over 50 exhibitors showcased their latest bikes, clothing and kit, and admission was free on all three days. Visitors could try out the test bikes straight away on the nearby Hoheward slag heap. The festival thus offers the chance not only to view the latest products, but also to ride them on gravel, climbs and trails.
The 2026 festival also had plenty to offer in terms of sport. The ROSE Scary Schotter took place on Saturday, covering 45 kilometres and 750 metres of elevation gain. New additions that year included a mountain time trial and the children’s race ‘Gravel Ground Rockets’. Radrevier Ruhr organised guided group rides, including two spectacular night rides.
It has not yet been decided which formats, routes and new features are planned for 2027. The programme is due to be announced in the coming months. Up-to-date information is available on the organiser’s website at gravel-ground.de.
