Shortly before the end of the 24-hour Rad am Ring race on Sunday, a man crashed and injured himself so badly that he had to be flown to hospital by helicopter. Because the helicopter landed on the track, the race had to be cancelled.
With just over an hour remaining, the organisers decided not to restart the race. A restart would not have been worthwhile, according to the organisers. The injured rider, who was taken to Bonn, had crashed in a right-hand bend on a dry road but in strong winds. Rescue workers, who, like the helicopter, were stationed directly on the race course at Rad am Ring, quickly came to the injured man's aid.
Rad am Ring has been at the Nürburgring since 2003 and celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. And with a record turnout. According to the organisers, a total of more than 9600 participants took part in the former Formula 1 race track, with almost 5800 taking part in the core race, the 24 hours, as well as numerous spectators.
This year's three-day event for amateur cyclists also included a Bundesliga cycling race. This could be held on Sunday afternoon without any problems.
