Peter Scheunemann stands on the station forecourt in Görlitz and forms his hands into a funnel: "I welcome you to the 15th International Touristic Peace Ride!" he shouts on Ascension Day 2015 to the hundred or so cyclists who have gathered in a semi-circle around him. Peter Scheunemann is wearing his old, long cycling shorts - as he will every day - as well as a blue and yellow Ukraina jersey and a cycling cap from the Russian team Katyusha. His wife Christel is standing next to him, their old Golf estate car, in which they will spend the next four days, is parked a few steps away. A logo with a dove of peace and a cyclist is stuck to the car. Behind it, the participants' luggage is being loaded into a small lorry.
The real one, the great peace ride, took place for the first time in 1948. Dubbed the "Tour de France of the East", it travelled through the GDR, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Amateurs from East and West competed in national teams. The large-scale event was propagandistically charged and exploited, and international understanding was propagated under the symbol of the dove of peace. Gustav Adolf "Täve" Schur, who won the tour in 1955 and 1959, became one of the GDR's biggest sports stars. Anyone who raced looked up to him ...
