It is the ultimate test of endurance in everyman races: The ascent of the Sormano wall as part of the Granfondo Il Lombardia, the popular sporting event in the Tour of Lombardy professional race. Next start: on 12 October 2025

Once again, the wall will probably be too steep for some cyclists: At the Granfondo Il Lombardia, the amateur race of the Tour of Lombardy on 12 October 2025, amateur cyclists will have to cross the "Muro di Sormano" on the way to the finish - a narrow asphalt cart path with a maximum gradient of 27 per cent, forcing many amateur cyclists to dismount. The professionals, who will contest the Tour of Lombardy the day before as the last of the five Classics monuments, will be spared the wall this year.

109 kilometres - with the Wall and Ghisallo

In total, the route of the race for everyone measures 109.5 kilometres. The start and finish are in Cantù. From the start, the route heads straight to Asso, where the climb to Colma di Sormana begins, which gets steeper and steeper before turning off the main road onto the ramps to the "wall". After a challenging and difficult descent, the route follows the shores of Lake Como to Bellagio, where the ascent to the Madonna del Ghisallo follows.

From there it is a hilly ride back to Cantù. The race has also recently been named after Felice Gimondi, the cycling star from Bergamo who died six years ago and won the Tour of Lombardy for professionals twice. On the occasion of the presentation of the 2025 event, his daughter says: "The classic of the falling leaves was always something special for him. The amateur riders will feel the same unique emotions on these legendary roads." Pain on the wall is likely to be the defining feeling that will certainly be remembered for a long time to come. According to the organisers, 2,200 participants took part last year. Information and registration: https://gfilombardia.it/
