The four athletes from the greater Hamburg area say they want to become the first German women's team to successfully complete the 4,800 kilometre distance.
"Never before has a relay quartet from Germany crossed the finish line at the RAAM consisting exclusively of women. The course will demand everything from us. But we want to break this record," says team rider Kati Schlieter. The 41-year-old has already competed in the RAAM once before in 2011 - albeit in a mixed team: one woman, three men. Despite the exertions, Schlieter was certain shortly after crossing the finish line: "I'll do it again."
When she told her friends back home about the race, she was not alone in wanting to take part in the 2014 RAAM as an all-women's relay team. Her professional colleague Kerstin Feist (39) immediately caught fire and brought Genia Schäferhoff (34) into the team as the third racing cyclist. Number four followed with Anika Schmidt (31) from Schlieter's cycling club. A few phone calls, a meeting, then the ambitious plan was finalised. And the name: German-Frauleins!
